US OPEN - RULES

OPEN DIVISION

This division is for advanced capoeira players of any style.

The players will have 1 (one) minute to play the game in a cadenced   "São Bento Grande de Angola" rhythm.

All players will start and finish the game with a handshake.

Remember that you are playing with another fellow "capoeirista" and not against him.

Remember that this is a non contact tournament: the goals of the game are to develop flow, show your technical skils as well as your "malandragem" without compromising the physical integrity of the other player. There's no "volta ao mundo" or "chamada" in this division.

The Judges Are Looking For:

  • Excellent game flow
  • Vision and experience
  • Strategy, set-ups
  • Improvisation/ Creativity

Movements That Are Allowed:

  • Rasteiras de chão, em pé and passa pé. No kicking in the shin, it has to be a clean rasteira, or passa pé.
  • Vingativas. Not grappling.
  • Tesouras, de frente and de costas.
  • Benção, Chapa (Pisão), Martelos (not low martelos - below the waist), Gancho & Esporão.
  • Banda de costas.
  • Cabeçada is allowed as a response to an "aú" but it must be applied in the stomach, not chest, chin or face.

Movements That Are Not Allowed:

  • Ponteiras
  • Grappling
  • Galopantes, escalas, godeme, punches, elbows or knees.

Important note: although there is no contact in this tournament, in this division certain kicks are allowed and it is up to the other player, since he/she is an advanced player, to escape in time and even be able to escape and counter attack.

Points Break Down:

In this division there will be only one game per player. The elimination system will be applied here. In case there is a tie, the players will come back for another round. There's no game score in this division like in the other divisions. You will play your best to pass to the next level. What is also of paramount importance in this division is that each player has a good posture and great respect to each other. Nothing here is personal or about proving anything about capoeira groups or styles. The referee has the ultimate authority to eliminate, disqualify, or take points away from both or each player in case one player loses his temper and professionalism.
