US OPEN - 2006 TESTIMONIALS

Henry Carvão, New York City

“I am glad that you (Pilão) had the opportunity to preside over an enormously important event like the one conceived by one of our Capoeira brothers, Itaborá. We’ve struggled to maintain and to forward this martial art/cultural art form against the forces all too familiar. Some have taken lead roles while others continue to support the struggle from the background. It’s extremely important to continue this endeavor because we have all prospered and grown as a result of exposure to the art form and the guidance and instruction given to us by our mestres and instructors. In an Afro centric worldview we continue to shape the lives, thoughts and futures of the young people to whom we come into contact through capoeira, either Angola or regional or whatever the amalgam.
Only through the broader understanding of our roles in the transmission of this art form can we serve our nation in building physically, emotionally, and spiritually strong young people, so to you Itaborá, and the countless others who made this event possible and the participants, …………….
‘Pa’ lante, siempre’.”

“Just a quick note to say to all my Capoeira brothers and sisters out there, that the tournament hosted in California this past weekend by Itaborá was fantastic! There were 15 capoeira groups participating and each came with good vibes and good Capoeira. I had the agony and pleasure of being a judge. What an experience!
There were great games: Duplas, Solos, and Music being displayed from the heart. Many of them were so even in skill level that it was too close to call. It was a tough position for me to be in but I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything in the world.
Itaborá is showing himself to be a person of great integrity, and commitment to the growth of Capoeira and in trying to unite all who fight and struggle to survive here in the U.S. teaching and promoting this wonderful and unique art form. My hat goes off to all those who have been spreading the word of all the events held by the various teachers of Capoeira. Much love, success and respect to all of you. Keep pushing forward. Capoeira is our mother. Grace her with your presence; bless her with your creativity and sharing, for your growth is her growth. Blessing to all.”
